Class A or Class B

ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 defines two fills. Class A covers the common injuries of a low-risk workplace such as an office or a light assembly area. Class B carries larger quantities and a wider range, including a tourniquet and a splint, and is intended for higher-risk or more populated sites like warehouses, manufacturing floors, and construction. If your hazard assessment is uncertain, Class B is the safer specification. Stations without a class rating are stocked to OSHA needs rather than to the ANSI schedule, which suits smaller or lower-hazard sites.

Sizing the cabinet

Shelf count is the practical guide to headcount. A 2-shelf cabinet suits a small crew or a satellite office. A 3-shelf cabinet covers a mid-sized site. A 4 or 5-shelf cabinet, and the extra-wide versions, are for larger headcounts or for a site that wants a single well-stocked station rather than several thin ones. All are steel with baked enamel, wall-mount slots, and a carrying handle.

Keeping it compliant after the sale

A station only stays compliant while it is stocked. ANSI Z308.1 expects contents to be maintained and replaced as they are used or expire, and an empty cabinet is a finding on an inspection. What is the difference between a Class A and Class B first aid kit?

Both are defined by ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021. Class A is the baseline fill for lower-risk workplaces. Class B adds quantity and range for higher-risk or larger sites, including items such as a tourniquet and a padded splint that Class A does not require. The standard does not tell you which to install. That comes from your own assessment of the hazards and the number of people on site.

Does OSHA require a first aid kit?

OSHA 1910.151 requires adequate first aid supplies to be readily available where there is no infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity. It does not itself specify a contents list, which is why the ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 fill schedules are the usual way to demonstrate that the supplies are adequate. Some OSHA standards for specific industries add their own requirements on top.

How many first aid stations does a site need?

The standards set the contents, not the count. In practice the driver is travel time: a station should be reachable quickly from anywhere someone works, which usually means more than one on a large floor plate or on a multi-storey site. Sites with separate high-risk areas often specify a Class B station there and Class A elsewhere.

Do the contents expire?

Yes. Medications and some sterile items carry expiry dates, and ANSI Z308.1 expects contents to be maintained. That is the practical reason to buy refills by the item rather than replace whole cabinets. Can these be wall mounted?

Yes. Every cabinet has wall-mount slots and a carrying handle, so it can be fixed in place or taken to the injury. The larger cabinets are heavier when fully stocked, so fix them to a structural surface rather than plasterboard alone.
