Collection: Flammable Storage Cabinets

Flammable liquid storage cabinets keep gasoline, solvents, paints, and other ignitable liquids in a fire-rated steel enclosure so a spill stays contained and a fire outside the cabinet has a harder time reaching what is inside. They are the most common way a shop, lab, or warehouse meets OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106 and the NFPA 30 Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. How much you can store, and how many cabinets you can have

OSHA 1910.106(d)(3) caps a single storage cabinet at 60 gallons of Class I or Class II liquids, or 120 gallons of Class III liquids. NFPA 30 adds a separate limit of three storage cabinets per fire area, with an exception for industrial occupancies where additional groups of cabinets are separated by distance. OSHA's construction standard, 1926.152, sets the same three-cabinet limit for a single storage area on job sites. Which class a liquid falls into depends on its flash point, and the NFPA 30 page breaks the six liquid classes down in detail. Storing more than three cabinets worth of flammables usually means a dedicated inside storage room or a detached storage building, not a fourth cabinet.

Flammable cabinet sizes

Those numbers are the cabinet's physical size, not permission to exceed the liquid limits above. A 90 gallon cabinet still cannot hold more than 60 gallons of Class I or Class II liquid.

What makes a cabinet OSHA compliant

Buyers often search for an "OSHA approved" cabinet. OSHA does not approve or certify cabinets, but it spells out how they must be built in 1910.106(d)(3): at least 18 gauge sheet steel, double walled with a 1.5 inch air space, a door sill raised at least 2 inches above the bottom to hold spilled liquid, and a three-point door latch. A compliant cabinet carries conspicuous "Flammable, Keep Fire Away" lettering. Most are also third-party listed to UL 1275 or FM approved, which is what buyers mean by a "UL listed" or "FM approved" cabinet. Self-close or manual-close doors

Manual-close doors stay open while you work and are closed by hand at the end of the job. Self-close doors are held open by a fusible link that releases in a fire, letting the doors swing shut and latch on their own. Both styles are code compliant, but many insurers and fire marshals prefer or require self-close. Outdoor cabinets add a lockable, weather-resistant body so flammables can be stored outside the building envelope.

How many flammable storage cabinets can you have in one fire area?

NFPA 30 limits a single fire area to three flammable liquid storage cabinets, and OSHA's construction standard 1926.152 sets the same limit for a storage area on job sites. Industrial occupancies can exceed that only when additional groups of cabinets are separated by distance. Beyond that, storage moves to a dedicated inside storage area or a detached building built to the fire-resistance and ventilation rules in NFPA 30, not more cabinets.

Do flammable storage cabinets need to be vented?

No. Neither OSHA nor NFPA 30 requires venting a flammable storage cabinet for fire protection, and leaving the factory bung caps in place is the default. Cabinets ship with capped vent bungs only so they can be connected to a vent if a local code or a specific process calls for it. If you do vent, the vent has to run to a safe location and the cabinet's fire integrity has to be preserved.

What is the difference between a flammable cabinet and a regular metal cabinet?

A flammable storage cabinet is double-walled 18 gauge steel with a 1.5 inch insulating air gap, a liquid-tight raised sill, and a three-point latch, all built to slow heat from reaching the contents in a fire. The OSHA bench test holds the inside of the cabinet to no more than 325°F during a standardized 10 minute fire exposure, which buys time to react rather than guaranteeing the contents never ignite. A standard shelving cabinet has none of that and offers no fire protection. Only a purpose-built, labeled cabinet satisfies OSHA 1910.106.

Do outlets and lights near a flammable cabinet need to be explosion proof?

The closed cabinet itself does not create a hazardous location, but the space around open dispensing and transfer points can be classified. Whether nearby outlets and lighting need explosion-proof or intrinsically safe ratings depends on the area classification, which is worked out using NFPA 497 and the Class, Division, and Group framework on the NFPA 70 hazardous locations page.
