If your business falls under general industry, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151 requires first aid supplies appropriate to workplace hazards. OSHA treats ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2021 as the consensus benchmark inspectors measure against. The standard sorts kits by injury-risk class (A or B) and environmental type (I through IV), so picking the right kit is a two-axis decision: how many people can get hurt, and where the kit has to live.

Manufacturing and industrial plants: Class A or B depending on your OSHA 300 log trend and machinery hazard, usually Type I wall-mounted at hazard stations plus Type II portable units. Facilities handling blood or other potentially infectious material also need a bloodborne pathogen cleanup kit per OSHA 1910.1030.

What is the difference between ANSI Z308.1 Class A and Class B first aid kits?

Class A kits are sized for lower-risk workplaces (offices, retail, light manufacturing) and contain the base supplies listed in Table 1 of ANSI/ISEA Z308.1. Class B kits are sized for higher-risk environments (construction, warehouses, heavy manufacturing) and contain roughly twice the supplies plus additional items: tourniquet, splint, splint padding, and larger trauma dressings. Class B is the right choice any time EMS response times run longer than a few minutes or the work environment could produce lacerations or severe bleeding.

Does OSHA require a first aid kit at every workplace?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151 requires employers in general industry to provide adequate first aid supplies when a hospital or clinic is not in near proximity. The standard doesn't name specific items, but OSHA has repeatedly pointed to ANSI/ISEA Z308.1 as the benchmark used during inspections. Construction sites have a parallel requirement under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.50. If you don't have an ANSI-compliant kit, you're not demonstrating compliance during an audit.

What Type kit should I pick for a service truck or trailer?

Type III or Type IV. Type III is portable and water-resistant, the standard choice for service trucks, pickup beds, and job trailers. Type IV adds rough-service ratings (impact, moisture, dust) and is specified for active construction sites, mining, and offshore work. If your trucks roll through rain or dusty job sites, Type IV is worth the small upcharge.

How often should an ANSI Z308.1 kit be restocked?

After every use, and at least annually. Many employers tie restocking to the safety audit cycle or a quarterly walk-through. Supplies with expiration dates (eye wash solution, sterile pads, certain medications) need to be checked against the date printed on the packaging; expired items don't count toward Z308.1 compliance.
