Collection: Marking Tools

Industrial marking tools for steel, iron, concrete, pipe, wood, and plastic. We carry oil-based paint markers from U-Mark, solid paint markers, valve-action markers, and specialty markers built for jobsites. Every marker is made in the USA with an aluminum barrel and a precision valve for consistent flow on rough, rusty, oily, and outdoor surfaces where standard markers fail.

Which marker for which surface

Surface Best marker type Why
Hot-rolled steel with mill scale, oil, or rust Solid paint marker (crayon-style) Writes through contamination without cleaning
Pipe (steam, chilled water, gas, process) Oil-based valve-action paint marker Permanent, weather-resistant, A13.1 color-coded
Concrete, timber, rebar Oil-based paint marker, broad tip Visible at distance; survives weather
Stainless food equipment Removable or low-halogen paint marker Avoids chloride stress-corrosion cracking
Cold concrete below freezing Low-temp solid paint marker Rated for sub-zero application

By application

Pipe and valve identification under ANSI/ASME A13.1 is the most common industrial use, color-coded by hazard class with flow-direction arrows. Oil-based valve-action markers hold up on hot steam lines, insulated chilled water, buried utility marking, and exposed pipe runs in plants and refineries.

Steel fabrication and weld layout uses solid paint markers that write through mill scale, oil film, and light rust. Marks survive preheat and post-weld cleanup, so fabricators don't re-layout after grinding.

Jobsite and construction layout covers stud marking, framing, surveying reference, rebar ID, and concrete form marking. Multiple colors enable color-coded layout and hazard identification, and weather-resistant pigment holds up for months on exposed concrete and timber.

What is the difference between an oil-based paint marker and a solid paint marker?

Oil-based paint markers have a liquid paint reservoir and a valve-action tip that dispenses pigment under pressure. They produce a smooth, glossy line and work on most surfaces including smooth metal and plastic. Solid paint markers are a compressed crayon of pigment, wax, and oil. They write like a grease pencil and cut through rust, scale, oil, and moisture that would clog a liquid marker. Fabricators typically use solid markers on raw steel and oil markers on finished or coated surfaces.

Will paint markers stick to rusty or oily steel?

Solid paint markers are designed for this. They physically deposit pigment by abrasion, so surface contamination doesn't prevent marking. Liquid oil-based markers also hold up well on lightly oiled or mill-scaled steel but may skip on heavy grease. For the worst surfaces, use a solid marker.

Are paint markers acceptable for ANSI/ASME A13.1 pipe color coding?

Yes. Paint markers are a standard method for applying A13.1 identification legends and flow-direction arrows to pipe. A13.1 specifies colors and label positions but not the marking medium, so either paint markers or pre-printed adhesive labels satisfy the standard. Paint markers are generally preferred in hot or insulated applications where adhesive labels can lift.

How long do exterior paint marker marks last?

Oil-based pigment on a clean, primed surface typically holds six months to two years in direct sun and weather before fading. On rough concrete and timber, the marks embed into the surface and last longer. For temporary layout marks you want to remove later, use a water-based or removable marker.
