Building placement (NFPA 10)

In commercial buildings, portable fire extinguisher placement follows NFPA 10, not the DOT vehicle rules below. Every point on the floor must be within 75 ft of a Class A extinguisher. Its gross weight of 33.5 lb is under 40 lb, so mount it with the top no more than 5 ft above the floor and at least 4 in of floor clearance (NFPA 10 §6.1.3.8). A 10-A unit is common where the fire load is high; the required size and count are set by your authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Cabinet fit

At 7-1/2 in diameter, this 20 lb unit does not fit a standard 10 lb extinguisher cabinet, which is only about 5-3/4 in deep. Wall-hook mount it in the open, or use a cabinet sized for a 20 lb extinguisher. Contact us to confirm fit for a specific cabinet.

DOT Vehicle Size Recommendations

DOT 49 CFR §393.95 requires commercial motor vehicles to carry a UL-listed fire extinguisher. Minimum size depends on vehicle class and whether the load is placarded hazmat.

Size UL Rating Recommended For
2.5 lb 1-A:10-B:C Pickups, light service vehicles, CMVs under 10,001 lb GVWR
5 lb 3-A:40-B:C Semi-trucks, box trucks, flatbeds, buses (standard CMVs)
10 lb 4-A:80-B:C Placarded hazmat transport, tanker trucks, large fleets
20 lb 10-A:120-B:C Heavy-duty extended-fire scenarios, high-risk cargo

See the full DOT fire extinguisher requirements guide for hazmat rules, mounting specifications, and inspection intervals.
