An exit device is the push bar on the inside of a door. This is the trim, the hardware on the outside face of that same door. It mounts through the door and works the device's latch, so it is what decides whether anyone can get back in.
What this one does
Key retracts latch. A key retracts the latch, so only a keyholder gets in.
Detex uses the BHMA function descriptions, and prints this one as: Entrance by trim when latch bolt is released by key. Key removable only when locked.
