The Detex ECL-230X is an alarmed deadbolt for a secondary exit: a door that has to stay available for egress but should not be used casually. It combines a deadbolt with a 100 decibel local alarm and a photo-luminescent sign, so leaving that way is both harder to do and impossible to do quietly.
This is the two point build, adding top and bottom bolts to the frame and sill on top of the deadbolt. Detex builds the vertical rods in three lengths: 84 in for a 6 ft 8 in to 7 ft door, 96 in for 7 ft to 8 ft, and 120 in for 8 ft to 10 ft. The rod length is not carried in the part number, so we confirm it against your door height before the device ships.
This is the weatherized build, which Detex offers for openings exposed to the elements.
How it works
The deadbolt throws 1 in with just over 3/4 in of engagement into the frame, and locking or unlocking it always arms or disarms the alarm, so the two cannot be left out of step. Pushing the bar releases the door and sounds a 100 decibel alarm powered by the included 9 volt battery. Resetting the alarm needs the control key, which is what stops someone silencing it and walking out.
The deadbolt is saw resistant and the lock body is a corrosion resistant alloy. Detex describes the housing as low profile. The push plate sign is photo-luminescent, so it absorbs light during the day and stays readable when the lights go down.
Fit and what you also need
One device covers 36 in to 48 in doors, and a 30 option covers 30 in to 36 in. It is non-handed and fits standard 1-3/4 in to 2-1/4 in doors in wood or hollow metal. Machine and sheet metal screws are supplied; sex nuts and security Torx screws are options.
A rim cylinder is not included. The device accepts 5 pin through 7 pin standard and interchangeable core rim cylinders with no cylinder collar, so order one alongside the device. To run the alarm off 9VDC instead of the battery, Detex specifies the BE-961-1 or BE-961-2 conversion kit. A pair of doors needs either a double door strike kit or a 90KR removable mullion.
Listings
Detex lists the ECL-230X to UL 305 as panic hardware and states ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 2. Detex also states the device meets NFPA 101 for life safety and California Title 19, meets ADA requirements, and carries California State Fire Marshal listing 4140-0127:102.
