The Detex V40 EE is a Grade 1 rim exit device with delayed egress built in. Push the bar and the device holds the door locked for 15 seconds while a 100 decibel alarm sounds, which gives staff time to respond before the door releases. It is the configuration specified for stockrooms, back-of-house exits, behavioral health units and retail secondary exits, where an unmonitored exit is a loss or safety problem. This is the 36 in device in satin aluminum. Detex describes its products as assembled in America.

How the delay works

The alarm is triggered by latchbolt movement, so the device reacts to someone actually pushing the bar rather than to a door position switch. A fire alarm input wires in at the power supply, which is how the door is released on an alarm condition. Detex rates the housing as tamper resistant and the 9V battery maintains the alarm, but not the delay, if power is lost.

Where a delayed egress device is permitted, and for how long the delay may run, is set by the adopted building and life safety codes for your occupancy. Start with NFPA 101 and IBC Chapter 10, and confirm with your authority having jurisdiction before specifying.

Choosing the power supply option

The device runs on filtered and regulated 24VDC and cannot operate without a supply. The standard build ships with a Detex supply, which is what a single opening needs. Detex does not name the model in its EE package descriptions, and its current price list introduces the PS80 as replacing the 90-800 while still listing the older model, so confirm which one you receive if battery backup matters: a 90-800 has no battery-charging circuit, while a PS80 can carry batteries.

The without-power-supply build is not a way to save money on a single door. Detex calls it PS0, and it exists for the second leaf of a pair, where the two devices share the supply that came with the first. A Detex filtered and regulated 24VDC supply is still required. If this is a single opening, or you are not certain a Detex supply with spare capacity is already at the door, choose the build that includes it.

Choosing the dogging option

Cylinder dogging holds the latch retracted so the door pushes open freely during open hours. The mortise cylinder is not included, so order one with the device or the unit arrives unable to dog. If the opening should stay latched at all times, the no-dogging build (Detex code LD) is the same price.
